Tips and tricks: wafer toppers

  • It’s absolutely fine to use shop-bought cakes – we won’t tell.
  • Make sure your hands are clean and dry: if your hands are wet, you could tear your toppers or smudge the design.
  • Wafer toppers work best when stood up in a big swirl of buttercream, rather than placed onto ganache or glace.
  • A little dab of water works perfectly well to attach your toppers, but use sparingly as too much moisture can curl the edges of wafer toppers.
  • If your kitchen is unusually hot after a long baking session, wait for it to cool down before you start to handle your toppers. Too much heat and humidity in the air can curl the edges of wafer toppers.

Tips and tricks: icing toppers

  • It’s absolutely fine to use shop-bought cakes – we won’t tell.
  • Make sure your hands are clean and dry: if your hands are wet, you could tear your toppers or smudge the design.
  • Icing toppers work best on a level surface. Use a palette knife or the back of a spoon to smooth icing and avoid air bubbles.
  • If you’re having trouble peeling your icing toppers from their backing paper, they might be too warm. Pop them back into their packet, stick them in the freezer for ten seconds and try again.
  • Don’t let your icing toppers freeze, otherwise they can crack.
  • If your kitchen is unusually hot after a long baking session, wait for it to cool down before you start to handle your toppers. Too much heat and humidity in the air can make the ink run on icing toppers.
  • For a professional finish, hide the edges of your cake toppers with a buttercream border.

    • For best results, top with your favourite buttercream recipe and wait for your buttercream to dry.
    • If you’re using a flat icing like fondant, ganache or glace, wait for it to dry, then add a small dab of water, honey or golden syrup onto the centre of each cake.
  2. Our wafer toppers are pre-cut, so carefully pop each one from the sheet with clean dry hands.
  3. Gently place your cupcake toppers onto your cakes. If you’ve used buttercream, you can gently press your toppers into this to make them stand upright if you like.
  4. Serve immediately!
