Easy Halloween Cupcakes (With a Finishing Touch That'll Wow Them)

Easy Halloween Cupcakes (With a Finishing Touch That'll Wow Them)

Halloween baking doesn't have to be complicated. A simple batch of chocolate cupcakes, a swirl of orange buttercream, and a personalised edible topper is all you need to make something that looks incredible. Whether you're baking with the kids on a Tuesday evening or getting ahead for a spooky party on the 31st, this recipe has you covered.

What You'll Need (Makes 12)

For the cupcakes:

150g self-raising flour

150g caster sugar

150g unsalted butter, softened

3 medium eggs

30g cocoa powder

2 tbsp whole milk

1 tsp vanilla extract

Pinch of salt

For the Halloween buttercream:

250g unsalted butter, softened

500g icing sugar, sifted

2–3 tbsp whole milk

Optional: a tiny drop of vanilla extract

Candy googly eyes (one pack does 12 cupcakes easily)

Halloween sprinkle mix (orange, black, white, yellow)

White spider web sugar decorations (optional but very worth it)

Purple and orange gel food colouring

Method

1. Make the cupcakes

Preheat your oven to 180°C / 160°C fan / Gas Mark 4. Line a 12-hole muffin tin with cupcake cases, go for black or orange ones if you can find them.

Beat the butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy, this takes about 3–4 minutes with an electric mixer, or a solid arm workout by hand. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each one.

Sift in the flour, cocoa powder, and salt, then fold gently until just combined. Add the milk and vanilla and stir until smooth, don't overmix or they'll come out a bit dense.

Divide the batter evenly between the cases (fill each about two-thirds full) and bake for 18–20 minutes, until a skewer comes out clean. Leave them to cool completely on a wire rack before you even think about the buttercream. Warm cupcakes and buttercream are a messy combination.

2. Make the buttercream

Beat the softened butter on its own for a couple of minutes until it's really pale and creamy. This step is worth doing properly, it makes the buttercream lighter and less greasy.

Add the icing sugar gradually (add it all at once and you'll be wearing it). Mix on low until it comes together, then beat on high for 2–3 minutes. Add the milk a tablespoon at a time until you get a consistency that holds its shape but still pipes smoothly.

Now for the fun bit: add your gel food colouring. A deep orange is the classic Halloween choice, but a moody purple or a dramatic black works brilliantly too. Mix until the colour is completely even throughout.

3. Pipe and decorate

Fit a piping bag with a large star nozzle and fill it with your buttercream. Pipe a swirl onto each cupcake starting from the outside and working inward, finish with a little peak in the centre. If you haven't piped before, do a practice swirl on a plate first. It only takes one or two goes to get the feel for it.

Press two candy googly eyes into the front of each swirl (find these in the baking aisle or online, they make an enormous difference)

Scatter Halloween sprinkles around the base of each swirl, a mix of white, orange, black and yellow works perfectly

Add some Halloween sprinkles onto the buttercream for extra drama

Finish with your personalised edible topper sitting proud at the top, “Hocus Pocus”, “Happy Halloween”, a name, a photo, whatever you like

At this point they look great. But here's where you can take them from "really nice homemade cupcakes" to "did you make those?!" 👇

The Finishing Touch: Personalised Edible Toppers

Our personalised edible cupcake toppers let you upload any image, a spooky illustration, your child's drawing of a ghost, a photo of your dog in a Halloween costume, a Jack-o'-lantern design, and we'll print it onto edible icing toppers that arrive ready to place straight onto your buttercream.

Our icing cupcake toppers lie flat on the buttercream, they look amazing, and they take about three seconds to apply. No piping skills required for that bit.

Some ideas for what to upload:

🎃 A Halloween design or illustration you love (a quick search for "free Halloween clipart" will throw up hundreds of options)

👻 Your child's own drawing of a ghost, witch, or monster, printed onto a cupcake it becomes something they'll never forget

🐈‍⬛ A photo of your pet in a Halloween outfit (we stand fully behind this)

🕷️ Your family's Halloween photo from a previous year

A spooky message or name for each person at the party

Running close to the 31st? We offer same-day dispatch on orders placed before 2pm on weekdays - so even if you're ordering on the 29th or 30th, you've still got time.
