What Size Topper Do I Need?
What Size Topper Do I Need?
For most round birthday cakes, our 7" round icing topper is the one you want, and it looks lovely on an 8" cake with a little border left for piping. Square cakes suit the 7x7" square, traybakes suit the 10x7" landscape or portrait, and cupcakes take our 1.6" (40mm) toppers, 12 to a sheet.
That covers most bakes, but if you're staring at a tin and still not sure, here's everything you need to get it right first time.

Round cakes
Our round topper is 7" across, which is the sweet spot for the classic 8" sandwich tin most of us have in the cupboard. It sits in the middle with about half an inch of cake showing all the way round, just right for a ring of buttercream swirls or a scattering of sprinkles.
On a 7" cake it goes edge to edge for a clean, full-coverage look. If you're baking smaller, say a 6" cake for a first birthday smash, the topper will be a touch too big, so a cluster of cupcake toppers or a glitter topper is a nicer fit.
Square cakes
The 7x7" square works the same way as the round: perfect on an 8" square cake with a border, or edge to edge on a 7" one. It's a lovely choice for photo toppers, as you get the whole picture without anything being cropped into a circle.
Traybakes and rectangle cakes
Baking for a class party, a big family get-together or the office? A traybake feeds a crowd, and our 10x7" toppers are made for exactly that. Go landscape for group photos, wide shots and party designs with a name across the middle. Go portrait for a photo of one person, a pet sitting up tall or a design that reads top to bottom.
Cupcakes
Our cupcake toppers are 1.6" (40mm) across, which fits neatly on a standard cupcake or fairy cake. On bigger muffin-style cases, the topper sits in the middle with a ring of frosting around it, which honestly looks just as good. You get 12 on a sheet, in icing or wafer, so it's easy to match them to a big cake with the same design.
Glitter toppers
Glitter toppers are a bit different, because they stand up from the cake on support sticks rather than lying flat. That means they work on pretty much any size, from a little 6" sponge to a three-tier showstopper. They come in 14 shades, they're double-sided, and plenty of people keep them as a keepsake afterwards.
A few tips before you order
- Measure the top of your cake, not the tin. A layer of buttercream or fondant adds a little width, so your finished cake is often slightly bigger than the tin it came out of.
- Think about the photo. Landscape suits group shots and wide pictures, portrait suits one person or a pet. Square keeps the whole photo with nothing cropped.
- Leave room for the extras. If you're planning candles, sprinkles or piped swirls, choose a topper that leaves a border for them.
- Still not sure? Drop us a message with your tin size and what you're baking. We're a small team in Wiltshire and we're always happy to help you get it right.
