Will my cake topper look like the photo I send?
Will my cake topper look like the photo I send?
Yes, in most cases your topper will look very close to the photo you send - but there are a few things worth knowing so you get the best possible result.
The honest answer on colour
Edible inks behave a little differently to standard photo printing, so colours can come out slightly softer or warmer than your original image. Think of it like printing a photo at home, the result is close, but not always a pixel-perfect match. Bright, bold images with good contrast tend to reproduce really well. Very dark photos, or anything with lots of shadows, can sometimes lose a little detail.
Image quality matters more than anything
The single biggest factor in how your topper turns out is the quality of the photo you upload. Here's what works best:
- High resolution - we recommend at least 1,000 pixels on the smallest edge
- Good lighting - bright, clear photos come out much sharper than dark or blurry ones
- Simple compositions - cupcake toppers work best with 1–2 faces; don't try to squeeze in the whole family reunion!
- JPEG format - no Word docs, PDFs, or screenshots if you can help it
If your photo is lower resolution, don't worry - we'll still print it and let you know if we have any concerns. We want your topper to look brilliant just as much as you do.
Icing vs wafer - does it make a difference?
It can, slightly. Print tends to come out a little sharper on icing toppers, while wafer toppers have a slightly more matte, softer finish. Neither is better, it just depends on the look you're going for and what you're putting it on.
A little sweetness, not a substitute for the photo
Your topper is meant to celebrate the moment, not replace the memory - so we always recommend keeping a digital copy of your favourite photo too. But if you send us a great image, we'll do everything we can to make sure it looks amazing on your cake. 🎂
